Gasoline prices ease; crude does the same
Pacific Business News (Honolulu)
Oil prices have been easing this week and gas prices also are easing both in Hawaii and on the Mainland.
On the New York mercantile exchange, benchmark crude was trading below $69 a barrel Tuesday. Traders said the main factor driving prices was a statement by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries that high prices have begun to affect demand.
The national average price of self-serve regular unleaded gasoline Tuesday was $2.86 5/10 a gallon, AAA reported. That was down fractionally from Monday and down almost 3 cents from a month ago.
Hawaii gas prices as reported by AAA Hawaii:
- Honolulu: $3.28 0/10, down more than 3 cents from a month ago.
- Hilo: $3.47 4/10, down almost 6 cents from a month ago.
- Wailuku: $3.60 9/10, down almost 5 cents from a month ago.
Prices have fallen faster in Los Angeles than in Honolulu and the two cities are no longer as close in price as they were earlier in June. The average price in Los Angeles on Tuesday was $3.23 a gallon. San Francisco was a little above $3.24. The most expensive Mainland city, Santa Barbara, saw prices averaging more than $3.95 a gallon.
